Artist's Description

Photographed by my father Darrel Keahey in the late 40's or early 50's.
The Barnsdall Main Street Well (also known as Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company Well #20 Osage County) is an oil well in the middle of Main Street in the town of Barnsdall, Oklahoma. It is believed to be the only such oil well anywhere in the world. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 1, 1997 as part of the "Energy Related Resources in Northeastern Oklahoma Multiple Property Submission". According to signage at the site, the well was completed on March 18, 1914 with a depth of 1771 feet.
It's still in the street with an electric driven motor, fence all around. Note that in this photograph that this pump is operated by a cable that runs back to a pump house. Also notice that people back then didn't need fences or large bollards to protect them from this obstacle, they just drove around it.
Current view of the same well can be seen at:

About Larry Keahey

Larry Keahey

My love for photography began when I was very young; as the photo shows me reaching for dad's new Leica camera. My 1st camera a Kodak, was given to me by my father back before grade school. The camera even had film in it. The only thing I remember about this camera was that you viewed through the top. Dad was a professional photographer most of his life. So you might say that I have inherited my father's eye to see the beauty of this world. I want to dedicate this page to my best friend, who is also my wonderful wife, Phyllis. She's been my camera crew for over 50 years and counting. Please enjoy the pictures and your comments are very welcome. Comments are how all of us on FAA know if what we offer as art is enjoyed by others. If you...
